Effect of arabinose on glucose fermentation by Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

چکیده
It has recently been demonstrated (Borzani et al., 1956) that the mash obtained from Araucaria brasiliensis seeds by acid hydrolysis, when fermented by Saccharomyces cerevisiae, give alcohol yields practically constant at pH values from 2.9 to 7.2. This fact represents a considerable increase of the yeast optimum pH interval. It has also been observed (Borzani et al., 1956) that glucose and arabinose were produced by the acid hydrolysis of the A. brasiliensis seeds. The hypothesis that arabinose could be responsible for the observed facts was suggested to us by Professor Renato Fonseca Ribeiro, and was confirmed in some preliminary experiments. This study deals with the effect of arabinose on the optimum pH interval of glucose fermentation by Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This report also shows that the presence of arabinose increases the fermentation rate.

Lignocellulosic feedstocks are thought to have great economic and environmental significance for future biotechnological production processes. For cost-effective and efficient industrial processes, complete and fast conversion of all sugars derived from these feedstocks is required. Hence, simultaneous or fast sequential fermentation of sugars would greatly contribute to the efficiency of produ...
متن کاملEngineering of Saccharomyces cerevisiae for efficient anaerobic alcoholic fermentation of L-arabinose.
For cost-effective and efficient ethanol production from lignocellulosic fractions of plant biomass, the conversion of not only major constituents, such as glucose and xylose, but also less predominant sugars, such as l-arabinose, is required. Wild-type strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the organism used in industrial ethanol production, cannot ferment xylose and arabinose. Although metaboli...
متن کاملIdentification of Important Amino Acids in Gal2p for Improving the L-arabinose Transport and Metabolism in Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Efficient and cost-effective bioethanol production from lignocellulosic materials requires co-fermentation of the main hydrolyzed sugars, including glucose, xylose, and L-arabinose. Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a glucose-fermenting yeast that is traditionally used for ethanol production. Fermentation of L-arabinose is also possible after metabolic engineering. Transport into the cell is the firs...
متن کاملImproving L-arabinose utilization of pentose fermenting Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells by heterologous expression of L-arabinose transporting sugar transporters
BACKGROUND Hydrolysates of plant biomass used for the production of lignocellulosic biofuels typically contain sugar mixtures consisting mainly of D-glucose and D-xylose, and minor amounts of L-arabinose. The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is the preferred microorganism for the fermentative production of ethanol but is not able to ferment pentose sugars. Although D-xylose and L-arabinose fermen...
متن کاملCoutilization of D-Glucose, D-Xylose, and L-Arabinose in Saccharomyces cerevisiae by Coexpressing the Metabolic Pathways and Evolutionary Engineering
Efficient and cost-effective fuel ethanol production from lignocellulosic materials requires simultaneous cofermentation of all hydrolyzed sugars, mainly including D-glucose, D-xylose, and L-arabinose. Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a traditional D-glucose fermenting strain and could utilize D-xylose and L-arabinose after introducing the initial metabolic pathways. The efficiency and simultaneous ...
